It starts from a paradox: carbon credits are a cornerstone of global climate finance and one of the few mechanisms that move money to climate action in the Global South at scale, yet the voluntary carbon market has been widely discredited. Between 2020 and 2024 that market, which had been channelling around two billion dollars a year to forest communities, climate projects and conservation in some fifty countries, shrank by roughly two-thirds. The Carbon Paradox initiative attributes the collapse not to science but to commercial interests, ideologically driven journalism and poorly understood conflicts of interest, and points to the communities that bore the cost. The initiative documents this story, builds the evidence base and creates the education needed to rebuild climate finance on honest, evidence-based foundations.
